Toothpaste

What Should You Avoid?

Most toothpaste contains a number of toxins that are easily avoidable by buying a natural product; however, you must even read the labels of toothpaste found in health food stores… They can still contain some pretty nasty stuff!

Some common toxins found in toothpaste include Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, Sodium Laureth Sulphate and Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate (sometimes listed as SLS or SLES), which are detergents and foaming agents. Also used to degrease engines. These compounds are highly carcinogenic. Just because it foams, doesn’t mean it makes things cleaner!!

Fluoride is another toxin used in toothpaste to prevent cavities and strengthen tooth enamel, but is toxic if ingested. Plus, the toxic effects are cumulative. Doesn’t sound like something you would want to brush your teeth with, does it?

In addition, most toothpaste contains artificial colours, flavors, and preservatives, which are unnecessary for effectiveness!

What Do We Recommend?

Read labels! Look for toothpaste with few ingredients, flavored with natural ingredients (mint, cinnamon, tea tree, etc). Baking soda helps remove surface stains, while xylitol has been reported to help prevent tooth decay. The most important thing in preventing cavities and gum disease is to remove plaque and food, which is easily accomplished with proper brushing and good, toxin-free toothpaste.
